What is a Pinched Nerve?

Adding calcium-rich foods like spinach, kale, dairy, or seaweed, is a great way to help solve this underlying issue. Calcium supplements or calcium-enriched, such as calcium-enriched orange juice, foods are other ways to add extra calcium.

Potassium-rich foods can also help remedy your pinched nerve problem. Diets low in potassium can be another contributing factor in nerve issues. Some of the best potassium-rich foods include apricots, nuts, avocados, and of course, bananas. You can add these to your breakfast smoothies or your salads, or just eat them as a snack.

If you think you have a potassium deficiency, you should visit your doctor. You may need a supplement but should only take it under a doctor’s direction. Too much potassium can be much more problematic than not enough. In fact, too much can be life-threatening.

Sit up Straight
Your neck and back are made to support your body when your head is in a neutral position. With the rise in phone and computer use, our posture can suffer. Tilting your head forward puts additional pressure on your neck and slouching puts additional strain on your back. If you make a concerted effort to maintain your posture, you can alleviate some of the extra strain on your nerves which can help lessen your pain and swelling.

Rest
A good way to help your pinched nerve is to rest it. You can limit or reduce motion of the area. Wearing a neck or back brace can help with this. Limiting motion and resting can allow your muscles and joints to heal. It can reduce inflammation and allow a faster return to feeling better. It can be difficult to rest your neck or back because they are essential to so much of your day to day activity. Whatever you can do to limit your movement, even for an hour or two, can be helpful.

Get Extra Sleep
Your body heals best when it is at rest. If you want to alleviate your pinched nerve pain, extra sleep is an excellent way to give your body more healing time. Extra rest also limits your movement. Sleep will help reduce swelling and decrease your pain. Additionally, you could consider wearing a brace while to sleep to further reduce your movement. An extra hour or two of sleep every night, while you are healing, can reduce your healing time

You may need to consider changing your sleep position, particularly if you are a stomach sleeper. Stomach sleeping is associated with more neck and back pain than side or back sleeping. Side and back sleeping are not as strongly associated with nerve pain.

Exercise
Find a low impact exercise that is comfortable because exercise increases blood flow and circulation, both of which help with healing. Swimming and walking are both low impact, helpful exercises to perform while you are healing. There are a few tips to keep in mind:

  •  Remember to maintain good posture while exercising.
  •  Maintaining a healthy weight can also help with your pinched nerve issue.
  • Inactivity can cause a loss of muscle strength. This can actually slow your healing.

Consider alternative exercises such as tai chi or water aerobics. Look for exercises that don't exacerbate your pinched nerve pain but still allow you to maintain a level of fitness.

Ice It Down
Using ice is a great way to reduce swelling. Swelling of an area is one of the factors of nerve pain. Inflammation is your body’s response to injury and icing an area is an excellent way to control swelling. Ice the area a couple times a day help your pain and speed up the healing.
